BRIDOL is the British Sundial Society's Register of Fixed and Mass Dials, which gives detail and photographs of about 8000 fixed sundials and 3000 mass dials in the UK.

Some of these are in private gardens, but the majority are publicly available.

St Michael’s Parish Church, Great Torrington

This fine dial set slightly askew on the porch has a grievous crack originating from the gnomon root. The churchwardens, T. Snell and R.Bartlett, have managed to get their names at the very top and below them a motto in Greek capitals can be translated as: "Let the slight shadow teach thee wisdom". Next there is engraved "Yahweh" in Hebrew in an eye of God oval and Vicar’s name (Rev G Morgan?) and Lat (50 deg 55 min) beneath that. The dial shows VII to V in half hours. Uses XII and IIII. Substantial externally mounted gnomon with fine wrought tracery. In small characters across the base ’T Fowler Del’, ’1832’, ’W B Cock Sculp’. Fowler was an eminent mathematician. The dial measures 900mmw x 1200mmh.
