BRIDOL is the British Sundial Society's Register of Fixed and Mass Dials, which gives detail and photographs of about 8000 fixed sundials and 3000 mass dials in the UK.

Some of these are in private gardens, but the majority are publicly available.

Dial in Somerset

The dial is on the west wall of the house, visible over the garden gate. Part of it at the lower right is missing, and the broken patch was mortared by the recent owner. It shows 1pm to 8pm using uprigth Arabic numerals, in 30, 15, 5 and 1 minute intervals, with a split substyle. A motto across the top reads: ’Sol lucet charitas extendit omnibus’ (The Sun, like Charity, knows not distinctions). Across the bottom are ’RUIT HO..’ (Ruit Hora - the hour rushes by) and ’Redeem the time, it …’ (half of the motto is missing). The inscription at the centre left reads ’W WOOD / JUNE / 1829’. William Wood (1787-1860) was a schoolmaster who had served under Nelson at Trafalgar.
