"You Can Never Step Into the Same River Twice"

Tim Chalk

Entered into the 2025 Design Awards

Commissioned as part of a set of sculptures for a private garden, the sundial is set into a bronze panel incorporated into a stone bench. The relief sculpture on the panel depicts the flora and fauna of the Water of Leith, which runs past the bottom of the garden. The overall theme of the sculptures and the sundial itself is based on a quote from the Greek philosopher Heraclitus; "You can never step into the same river twice", evoking the transience of things, all slaves to Time.

Tim says: "This dial was modelled in clay as a panel, with the hemisphere, also modelled in clay, added at the end. I then made a silicone mould from the clay which was handed over to the foundry to be cast in bronze using the lost wax process."
