Roman numerals mark the hours from 6am til 5pm, standing upright. The Latin inscription across top of the dial in Roman capitals reads, 'Quasi Rivus Tempus Fluit', translated as 'time flows like a river [brook]'.
There is a separate 200 x 100mm slate plaque with client initials and date of commissioning, affixed to the wall of the cottage nearby. The bronze 'pencil point' style rod gnomon is 410mm in length, 8mm diameter, made by blacksmith Tom Boyd.
