Wall Sundial: Emmanuel College, Cambridge

This wall sundial is in a court of Emmanuel College, Cambridge. The dial is cut into a rectangular slab of slate with rounded elongations top and bottom. The gilded sunburst is set in a blue background. The hour lines from 5 am to 4 pm are gilded straight lines with triangular tips added at their outer ends. The inscription, and all shall be well and all manner of thing shall be well, is a quotation from the writings of Julian of Norwich (ca 1343 to 1416). These writings are the earliest surviving English language works attributed to a woman. The sundial was installed in 2024.
