Memorial Horizontal Sundial in Berkshire

The Cardozo Kindersley Workshop, Cambridge

Entered into the 2025 Design Awards

This horizontal sundial is a memorial to Guy McCrossan Haworth who was a Cambridge research student in the late 1960s and was well known to Frank King who undertook the delineation. The dial is cut into a two-inch thick slab of Honister slate which is in the form of a super-ellipse. The motto, A star to steer her by, echoes Guy's enthusiasm for ocean-going yachting. Both the motto and the hour numbers are painted white. Guy's name is red. The rays from the gilded sunburst serve as hour lines. An additional inscription is cut round the vertical edge of the slate. The sundial was installed in July 2023.
