wedging out

: (or canting out) placing wedges between a dial plate and its mounting surface. (a) for a horizontal dial: to compensate for moving a dial to a different latitude from the one it was designed for, (b) for a vertical dial: to ensure that it faces a cardinal point of the compass (usually S).

West

: the point on the horizon 90º (measured anti-clockwise) from the north point. The Sun appears to set at the west point at the equinoxes.
