SRN 3436 Middlesbrough, North Yorkshire
A very busy dial by John Smith of Stockton on Tees, with four mottoes in
English, also Greek and Hebrew mottoes, an inscription, and an eight line
paraphrase of Psalm xix by the poet Addison. Room is still found for hour
rings for New York, Australia and Middlesbrough, and a diagram of the solar
system. The third picture is of a dial only known from an unidentified guide
book, but said to have been at Castle Howard in North Yorkshire. It may have
been Smith's working model for the Middlesbrough dial. Mrs Gatty has much to
say about the life of John Smith.
